Hello from Canada! My name is Heather Cooper and I am a high school teacher of Science and English. I work in an area of central Canada, close to the city of Toronto. A group of Canadian teachers was invited to visit Korea to learn about your schools and your culture. I was very excited when I heard about this opportunity!

Since I arrived, I have been very busy visiting all kinds of interesting places: Do-gok M. S. where my homestay teacher works, Jae-il E.S., Choon-yang E. S., and Cho-Seun University. I was very impressed with the facilities in Jae-il school, and the warm welcome we received at Choon-yang, where we also saw a demonstration of traditional Korean instruments. The students were really talented. I am interested in plants, so I really enjoyed seeing the Cho-Seun rose garden, as well as the Sose-won traditional garden. Something else that I had always wanted to see was the traditional colourful painting on the temple ceilings, with its bright colours. Therefore, I was very pleased to be taken to General Kim Dyeok-Ryeong's shrine, as well as both the Won-Hyo and the Un-ju temples. The forest and mountains around these places is so beautiful. It was so kind of the home stay hosts to spend so much time driving us long distances.

On Friday night, I had so much fun, in a more informal way. We went to the spa, which felt wonderful, especially in the hot weather. Later, I had a fun-filled evening with the teachers from Do-gok M. S.: we had dinner together, then went to a special room for singing and dancing.

On the weekend, I continued to be treated to many special sights. One beautiful place was the Boseong Tea Plantation. We climbed up the steep slopes and posed for many pictures, before enjoying the coolness of the forest below. The next day, I enjoyed walking on the wall at the Naganeupseong Folk Village, and imagining how the early people lived. Canada has a very short history compared to Korea! We were also taken to the lovely location of the Naejangsa Temple, in Naejangsan National Park. All the trips were enjoyable, thanks to the mountain scenery.

Our whole group was treated to a very special visit to Jeju Island, because of the generosity of the Jeollanamdo School Board. It was fun to hear about all the adventures of the other Canadian teachers, because we were in different towns. A lot of our time in Jeju was spent travelling around to see such sights as the Botannical Gardens and the different types of volcanic rock. The highlight of our visit was swimming and sunbathing on a beautiful beach. I can understand why so many Korean people feel that Jeju Island is a special place to visit.

My weekends I spent in a relaxed, family manner: shopping, attending church, enjoying the sauna and pool, playing games, and a wild ride around the Gwangju Citizen Park on tandem bicycles! It was impressive to see so many Koreans of all ages enjoying exercise and family time together. The same was true when we made a last visit to Manyeon Mountain, to enjoy the view and the cool evening air.

My impressions of Korea are so favourable: the people are extremely warm and friendly, the countryside is beautiful, the food is very nutritious, and there are many interesting things to see. I would particularly like to thank my homestay teacher, Sunny (Sun Kwang-ja), her family, and all of the staff at Do-Gok M. S., for making me feel so welcome. Also, the English class students gave me a concert and such a collection of Korean things to take home! I really hope some of you can visit Canada someday. You are welcome to stay with me anytime!
